CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

“I don’t care, Marnie,” Olivia told her agent. “I have no interest in continuing the series. I’m ready to move on.”

“I’m not sure you heard me,” Marnie said. “Twice your last advance.”

“Yes, I heard you, and I admit, I’m tempted.”

“Good.”

“But not tempted enough.” Twice her previous advance was definitely significant, but Olivia wasn’t concerned about the money. “You know I want to write something more mainstream.”

“Of course. And I agree with you. But your last books had a nice showing on the Essence bestseller list. You have a great following for this series, and my feeling is the one you’re about to turn in will hit USA Today. Things are progressing as they should, Olivia. You have to think of the big picture.”

“I am thinking of the big picture. I have a limited audience.”

“But a growing one. The more success you have with this series, the more people will know your name, and the more they know your name, the more they’ll buy your work when you cross over to mainstream fiction.”

“Marnie…”

“Personally, I’d love to see Darius’s story. He was such a complex secondary character, he’d be great for a spin-off.”

Olivia loved her agent, but she had tunnel vision. She saw only sales figures and advances.

“I’ll think about Darius,” Olivia grudgingly agreed. But she didn’t want to. Writing this last book in the series hadn’t been much fun. In fact, it had been grueling. She was more than ready to be done with it.

Though the reviewers wouldn’t believe it, she had a lot more in her than erotic werewolf stories. She wanted to try her hand at a literary novel, one that had been burning in her imagination for years. About a jazz musician, it was loosely based on the life of her father. It dealt with genius and demise. It didn’t have a happy ending, but one that was realistic and hopeful. And she was sure the reviewers would love it.

And if not that story, then she was ready to write mainstream mysteries. People loved the erotic element of her work, and she loved writing it. Her mother, of course, hated it. The fact that it riled her mother so much often led her to push the limit of erotica. The result was successful, though, and she would definitely keep that component in her stories. But werewolves—they hadn’t gotten her any literary respectability.

“I know you want the reviewers to like your work.”

“Damn, how do you always know what I’m thinking?”

“You don’t think that after ten-plus years of representing you that I know you by now?” Marnie didn’t wait for a reply. “That’s why I know what’s best for you.”

“I think my readers will follow me if I write mysteries. As long as I keep the level of eroticism the same.”

“Maybe. But—”

“I’m not saying no to another werewolf book. Just … give me some time to think about it. See if another idea comes to me.”

“Fair enough. Let’s touch base in a couple days.”

“Sounds good, Marnie.”

They ended the call, and Olivia replaced the receiver.
